If there is one thing black people are dead serious about, it’s our music. We give our best artists the status of kings, legends, and gods. Black music is an incredibly important part of black culture. But contrary to popular belief, there is a lot of “white” music black people LOVE too. Here’s my list of white songs both old and new that blacks LOVE . Do you have more to add? Let me know in the comments!
**Disclaimer** – This list does not include “black sounding” artists who are white. Therefore I have not included artists such as Teena Marie, Robin Thicke, Michael McDonald, etc. I’m talking about music “made by white people for white people”.
So without further to do, let’s get it in!
Eurythmics Sweet Dreams
This song is really dope. Many black people will claim this song as their own. The cryptic lyrics offer a vivid description of black urban life.
Tears for Fears – Shout
Black people love Tears for Fears records. This one, “Everybody wants to rule the world,” and the other one from the breakfast club were all classics. No one can remember the verses on any Tears for Fears songs, but the hooks are unforgettable.
Justin Timberlake – Sexyback
While JT has had a few joints that black people “liked,” this is the one that we “LOVE”. This song had grown ass church-going senior-citizens talking about their “bringing sexy back.” Next level shit.
Queen – Another One Bites The Dust
That funky bassline and the hard, almost rap-like delivery sealed the deal for blacks everywhere on this one. Queen had several hits that black people can’t get enough of.
Elton John – Benny and the Jets
Something about that sweet piano riff gets blacks nodding their heads. No wonder that’s been sampled a few times. This video is from Soul Train of all places.
Sting – Roxanne
Roxanne is a classic, no matter the color of your skin. I’m not sue why though. Sting can’t really sing, and he’s always off the beat. We love him anyway.
Kings of Leon – Use Somebody
The grocery store I frequent is smack dab in the middle of the hood. It’s right across the street from the Tompkins Houses in Brooklyn and two blocks from the infamous Marcy Projects. The store plays some kind of “light” radio station over the PA system. Most of the time no one is paying attention to that what’s being played, but when “Use Somebody” comes on, literally everyone in the store starts to sing along. I’m not making this up. I don’t care for any of their other songs, but “Use Somebody is a future classic.
Phil Collins – In the Air Tonight
Pure dopeness. Black people love this joint. In fact, a lot of Phil Collins’ jams found their way into black people’s tape decks.
Kelly Clarkson – Since you been gone
Wanna see a bunch of grown black chicks jump around like some white teeny boppers that just popped some X? Then play this record. Maybe it’s the bitterness towards men in her music that black women LOVE. Kelly Clarkson is basically the white version of Keisha Cole.
Red Hot Chili Peppers – Under the Bridge
This is one of my favorite songs, period. If you don’t know the words to this, you need to get a bucket and a rope. Classic.
